Philadelphia Eagles add WR depth over the weekend and open up roster spot ahead of Week 2 vs Kansas City Chiefs
Expect more moves before Sunday vs. KC.
The Philadelphia Eagles made a handful of roster moves over the weekend as they prepare to take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2.
After placing fullback/linebacker Ben VanSumeren on Injured Reserve with a knee injury he suffered in the team’s Week 1 win over the Dallas Cowboys, the team immediately signed veteran defensive end Za’Darius Smith.
Initially a fourth-round pick out of Kentucky by the Baltimore Ravens back in 2015, Smith has totaled 69 career sacks, 173 QB hits, 85 tackles for loss, and 10 forced fumbles over 140 regular-season games with 96 starts.
On the same day, the Eagles added depth at wide receiver, signing former New England Patriots’ Javon Baker to the practice squad. They moved on from outside linebacker Antwaun Powell-Ryland in a corresponding move.
Baker, originally a fourth-round pick out of the University of Central Florida, was drafted by the New England Patriots last year. Standing 6-foot-1, Baker led the Big 12 in his final collegiate season with 1,139 receiving yards and an impressive 21.9 yards per catch. As a rookie with the Pats, he appeared in 11 games and recorded one reception for 12 yards.
Powell-Ryland, selected in the sixth round by the Eagles out of Virginia Tech in this year’s draft, was waived during final roster cuts but was re-signed to the practice squad the following day.
Eagles Open Up Roster Spot Ahead of Week 2 vs. Kansas City Chiefs
The Eagles also waived backup offensive guard Kenyon Green on Saturday afternoon, which opened up a roster spot.
Green, a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, was acquired in March as part of the trade that sent safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson to the Houston Texans.
This move could mean that the Eagles are not so worried about Landon Dickerson’s back or knee injuries after all.
