The Philadelphia Eagles made a trade deal with the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday morning. The Birds sent a 2026 fifth and 2027th seventh-round pick in exchange for experienced backup quarterback Sam Howell and a 2026 sixth-round pick.
And in order to make room for Howell, the Eagles waived safety Lewis Cine with an injury designation.
He hurt his groin in the Eagles’ preseason win over the New York Jets on Friday and was spotted on crutches after the game.
Cine, a former Georgia Bulldogs star, was originally drafted by the Vikings in the first round (32 overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft. However, a leg injury ended his rookie season early and lingered into the 2023 season.
He ultimately ended up on the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad, which is where the Eagles poached him from back in January ahead of their wild-card win over the Green Bay Packers.
Over the last three seasons, Cine has seen action in 11 total games while playing 10 career snaps on defense and 134 special teams snaps. He has logged one tackle so far.
Way before making the jump to the NFL, Cine saw action in all 14 games as a freshman for the Bulldogs in 2019, racking up 20 tackles, an interception, and a couple of pass breakups.
He stepped into a bigger role in 2020, starting 10 games and finishing with 52 tackles. By 2021, Cine was a key part of the Bulldogs’ defense, starting all 15 games and earning Third Team All-American and Second Team All-SEC honors. He wrapped up that season with 73 tackles, one pick, and nine pass breakups en route to a National Championship win where he was crowned Defensive MVP.
At the end of his Georgia career, Cine had appeared in 39 games and finished with 144 tackles, 14 passes defensed, and two interceptions.
