The Philadelphia Eagles lost offensive coordinator Shane Steichen this week as he was named the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts.
Losing Steichen obviously isn't ideal, but the Eagles have an in-house replacement in quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson that could easily slide into the offensive coordinator role.
Promoting Johnson would provide some extremely important continuity for Jalen Hurts and the Eagles' offense.
There's just one problem.
There's no guarantee that Johnson will stick around in Philly.
Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer suggested on Wednesday that the Carolina Panthers could aggressively target Johnson to take over as Frank Reich's offensive coordinator in Charlotte.
Breer noted that Carolina threw a lot of money at defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero to persuade him to join the Panthers' staff instead of the Minnesota Vikings' staff.
And he thinks it's feasible that they could do the same to lure Johnson to Carolina.
The Panthers have the richest owner in the NFL in David Tepper (by over six million), while Eagles owner Jeff Lurie is around the middle of the pack (Tepper is worth $13 billion more than Lurie).
If the Panthers want to outbid Philly for Johnson, they certainly could. But how much will Carolina be willing to offer a first-time NFL offensive coordinator under a new head coach?
It's worth noting that the Panthers are also interested in former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter, who has connections to Reich and new Panthers assistant Jim Caldwell.
The Eagles would be wise to promote Johnson as quickly as possible to avoid losing him to a Carolina franchise that's ready to spend big to win.
We should know how this plays out in the next couple of days.
