The NFL may choose to give Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman a new reason to be aggressive on the trade market this offseason.

According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, the league will consider altering the timeframe for when teams can trade away draft picks for players or other draft assets.

NFL may allow teams to trade draft picks five years out instead of three

Via Schefter, there will be “a push” during this offseason to extend the NFL trade limits from three years of draft picks available to five. In essence, front offices can mortgage even more draft capital in the future to pull off big trades that affect their roster as soon as possible.

That sort of rule swap could push someone like the Eagles GM to be even more aggressive in building a roster with proven talent and incredible upside that can win immediately and take advantage of a winning window, rather than holding onto draft picks down the road.

It remains to be seen how valuable a pick that is four or five years out truly is, though. You never know where a team may end up by the time that particular draft rolls around, where the pick involved in a deal is sitting.

Most notable Howie Roseman trades for Eagles

Roseman has had a knack for the surprising, aggressive move via trade during his career in Philadelphia. Fans have learned to trust Roseman for the most part when it comes to making trades for veteran players over the years.

Trading for Darius Slay: Philly shipped off a third and fifth-round pick in exchange for a top-flight, experienced CB who helped them win Super Bowl LIX over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Acquiring A.J. Brown from Titans: This may be the most notable move of the Roseman era for the Eagles. He traded the 18th pick of the 2022 NFL Draft and a third-round pick for the Pro Bowl talent at wide receiver. Keep in mind that the Eagles also had two other first-round picks in that draft.

It was a move that has paid off in a major way, and it involved Roseman being willing to ship off notable draft compensation. Brown immediately signed an extension with the Eagles following the trade, too.

Draft pick madness with Saints: In one of the more odd swaps in recent years, the Eagles flipped some draft picks with the Saints to acquire an extra second-round selection from New Orleans. The Eagles chose to trade away a first-round pick in 2022 to get another 2023 first-round pick.

It was basically Philly taking advantage of an ultra-aggressive Saints front office that wanted multiple picks in the draft that year. The game planning from Roseman can go both ways: being aggressive and allowing other teams to be a bit overzealous and taking advantage.

  • Eagles: No. 18 pick, pick 101, Pick 237, 2023 first-round pick, and a 2024 second-round pick
  • Saints: Pick 16, Pick 19, Pick 194 (All in 2022)

This adjustment to the rules for teams regarding trades could lead to long-term commitments and risky moves that look horrific years down the road. For the Eagles, their front office has proven to be the “winner” of these sorts of dynamic deals with plenty of impactful moving parts.

Let’s see if Roseman has anything unique up his sleeve this year regarding this change, if it comes to fruition.
