Pro Football Focus NFL insider Doug Kyed believes it's possible that the Philadelphia Eagles will suffer a key departure this offseason.

Kyed reported on Wednesday that Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon is expected to be a hot coaching candidate this upcoming offseason.

From PFF:

Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon is expected to be a hot coaching candidate again this offseason with his unit ranking sixth in EPA per play against.

Some might scoff at the idea of Gannon as a "key loss", but it certainly would be for the Eagles.

Part of the reason that Philly is off to a 4-0 start this season is because of their defense. Sure, the offense has been dynamic, but the defense is what makes the Eagles a "complete team". And it's why I think Philadelphia is the team to beat in the NFC.

Continuity is an underrated aspect of successful NFL teams. Losing Gannon to a head coaching job would certainly hurt that continuity for Philly.

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni is an offensive guy, which means Gannon is essentially the head coach of the defense.

We've seen plenty of defensive coordinators leave franchises and then all of a sudden a contender turns into a pretender. I always think about the Carolina Panthers' downfall after reaching the Super Bowl during the 2015 season as the 2016 offseason when defensive coordinator Sean McDermott left Charlotte to become the head coach of the Buffalo Bills. The Panthers haven't been the same since.

I'm not saying that will be the case with Philly if Gannon leaves after the 2022 season, but it's definitely something Eagles fans should keep an eye on in the coming months.
