‘I really didn’t do sh-t,’ Sydney Brown takes zero credit for his historic play in Eagles’ win over Bucs
Sydney Brown is taking zero credit for what he did against the Bucs in Week 4.
The Philadelphia Eagles are undefeated and have their special teams unit to thank.
Philly’s special teams made history in their Week 4 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.
The moment came early in the first quarter when Eagles tight end Cameron Latu blocked Bucs’ Riley Dixon’s punt, and safety Sydney Brown recovered the ball and returned it 36 yards for a touchdown.
“We definitely dialed up a little blitz on ‘em and they opened up Latu right to the punter,” Brown said of the play. “And he blocked the punt. It couldn’t have been a better bounce. Great play by him, great play by the unit executing that, and a great dial-up by Clay.”
It’s the first time in more than 10 NFL seasons that a player has blocked a punt for a touchdown, though Brown refuses to take too much credit for it.
“I really didn’t do shit. The ball just kind of bounced my way, and I just ran with it. I didn’t do anything other than the ball bouncing in my hands.”
Philly’s Special Teams Unit is Dominating Early
The Eagles’ special teams unit has been a nightmare early this season.
Just last week, Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter blocked back-to-back field goal attempts. Davis even returned one for a score to seal the Eagles’ win over the Los Angeles Rams.
According to senior NFL researcher Tony Holzman-Escareno, the punt block returned for a touchdown, combined with Week 3’s field goal block return touchdown, marks the first time in NFL history that a team has scored back-to-back touchdowns via a field goal block and a punt block.
The next chance for the Eagles’ special teams to add to the history books will come in Week 5 against the Denver Broncos in front of their hometown crowd.
