Darius Slay embodies everything the Eagles preach, and what the city of Philadelphia represents.

Though he’s been in Philly for just two seasons, it was no surprise to see him honored as a team captain for the 2022 season.

“Like I was telling the group, that means a lot to me. That’s probably one of the biggest achievements of my career. I’ve never been a captain before,” said Slay, who is entering his 10th season in the NFL.

It’s clearly not something Slay takes lightly, especially considering the captains are voted on by their teammates.

“Had me a little tear-eyed for a minute. I was in the huddle like, ‘Oh snap.’ It’s a blessing, man. I appreciate that from my teammates because I honestly go out there and go hard every day. Compete every day. Try and be the best version of me every day.”

Slay is coming off his first Pro Bowl season with the Birds, and his fourth over the last five seasons. Big Play Slay lived up to his nickname, scoring three defensive touchdowns and recording three interceptions a year ago.

The Eagles hope he can top his takeway numbers on a defense that’s expected to be one of the NFL’s strongest units in the upcoming season.
