The Pittsburgh Steelers got a big win against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday and it kept an important franchise streak alive.
Pittsburgh's 24-16 win against the Panthers means the Steelers still have a chance to finish the season with a winning record.
At 6-8, Pittsburgh would need to win their final three games of the season to finish with a winning record and their 19th straight non-losing season.
Mike Tomlin, who has been the Steelers' head coach since 2007, has never had a losing season as a head coach.
Keeping that streak alive is something that's important to Pittsburgh's players.
Steelers wide receiver Diontae Johnson talked on Sunday about the importance of keeping Tomlin's streak alive.
"It's real important to us," said Johnson of Tomlin's streak. "Obviously he's been having winning seasons pretty much every year. We want to finish out strong for him. And us well, we're not out of it. We just gotta win our games…finish strong, you never know what could happen."
Pittsburgh still has a chance to make the playoffs, though they'll need some help.
But even if the playoffs weren't a possibility, this team would still have plenty of motivation. Finishing the season with a winning record is clearly important to players on the Steelers' roster.
Pittsburgh has games remaining at home against the Las Vegas Raiders, on the road against the Baltimore Ravens and at home against the Cleveland Browns.
The Steelers lost to the Ravens and the Browns earlier this season, so there will be a revenge element in those games as well.
As rough as this season has gone for Pittsburgh, they still have a chance to make the playoffs and finish with a winning record. That just speaks to the job that Tomlin has done as a head coach. Not many coaches could keep a team that starts 2-6 focused. Tomlin, however, isn't just any coach. And this season has proven that.
