Steelers to buck a decades-long trend following information on who will play in the preseason finale against the Panthers
A trend no more.
The Pittsburgh Steelers’ preseason finale is merely days away.
On Tuesday, HC Mike Tomlin named who all will be in, and who will be out for Thursday night.
And while it will be the highest level of participation yet, it won’t include the starter everyone wants to see…
Aaron Rodgers to forego preseason finale
“As far as playing time Thursday night, there’s four guys I’m considering not playing. That’s Cam [Heyward], T.J. [Watt], Aaron [Rodgers] and DK [Metcalf],” Tomlin said Tuesday. “Everyone else is under consideration. They’re preparing as if they’re gonna play. There are a lot of variables in it. Who’s playing for Carolina and things of that nature that might provide worthy competition. But as I sit here today, all healthy outside of the four that I mentioned, are preparing and scheduled to play.”
You have to go back to before Ben Roethlisberger was the quarterback of the Steelers to see a preseason where the starting quarterback didn’t take a single snap.
The pushback on that would be if you asked how many of those quarterbacks were headed into their age 42 season and had a sure-fire, first-ballot Hall of Fame resume?
Oh that’s right, none of them.
Would you like to see Rodgers out there? Especially with Will Howard’s hand injury? Of course. But there is no need to risk seeing your season go by the wayside before the games even count. Especially when it’s been a camp that saw a few more injuries than the Steelers would have liked…
“We got a lot of guys working their way back, increased participation out there,” added Coach Tomlin. “Alex Highsmith, Donte Kent, Calvin Austin and others are working their way back to us. Again, we’ll make an 11th hour decision on those guys. We’ll always wanna be inclusive this time of year because we realize the scarcity of the opportunities and so, if proven healthy enough, we’ll give those that have missed time an opportunity to play. And a lot of those judgments, or at least some of those judgments, could come down to pre-game work.”
