Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers could be throwing to another familiar face following the surprise release of veteran WR
The Steelers might not be done adding talents to the WR room.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are riding high on a two-game win streak that has the team firmly atop the AFC North with three weeks to go. That is due in large part to quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ play over the last two weeks. He has played his best brand of ball in Pittsburgh over the fortnight.
A big reason for that has been the insertion of veteran presences into the WR corps. Marquez Valdes-Scantling caught his first TD with the Steelers against the Miami Dolphins on Monday night, and Adam Thielen has been a calming presence for Rodgers in the passing game.
But following the surprise release of one of Rodgers’ former teammates on Tuesday, there might be time for another reunion.
Steelers could target Allen Lazard following his release from the Jets
Lazard has played eight years in the NFL, seven of which came with Rodgers. 2025 was the first season that Lazard didn’t have Rodgers throwing him the ball, and it has shown. The 30-year-old WR is an ideal Z WR in an offense that is predicated on doing a lot of what Pittsburgh likes to do schematically.
He can dig out safeties in the run game and run those in-breaking routes over the middle. The familiarity and fact that players like Roman Wilson are inactive on gamedays now lend credence to the idea that a reunion could be in store.
However, my question is: What was the purpose of signing Adam Thielen? Oh, and let us not forget that MVS just started making plays after being on the practice squad for weeks. Then there’s also Calvin Austin III, who is technically still the Steelers’ WR No. 2.
So it sounds crazy to say, given the lack of production in that room outside of DK Metcalf, but the Steelers may have too many mouths to feed when it comes to pass catchers. You know who last night’s leading reception getter was? RB Kenny Gainwell, who has been a revelation as a pass catcher in this offense.
It’s definitely plausible, and Lazard is aiming to sign with a playoff-contending team, so all of the factors are met for his potential signing, but I’m not sure that’s what the Steelers need right now. The chemistry is finally clicking, and adding another name may throw off what has taken 15 weeks to build.
