The Pittsburgh Steelers have released their initial 53-man roster for the 2023 season.

And while most of the moves were to be expected, there were some that came off as surprising and others as head-scratching.

Here are three moves from roster deadline day that leave you wondering who, how, and why:

Zach Gentry Released

The most stunning move of the day. Gentry was viewed as a lock to make the team even as Darnell Washington proved to be capable of similar tasks. Pittsburgh seemingly went with the younger and cheaper tight end, but Gentry is a prime candidate to be on the practice squad.

OL Kendrick Green Traded

Seeing Kendrick Green no longer in the black and gold is no surprise. But seeing him shipped out of Pittsburgh for any sort of draft capital after the preseason he had, is frankly, astonishing.

Pittsburgh received a sixth-round pick in 2025 in return for Green from the Houston Texans.

Steelers Carry Two Punters

A move that made me check my final roster three times, Pittsbrugh did in fact keep two punters and still have two punters as of publishing. Seemingly looking for a trade partner, one of them will be gone, especially after this morning's big signing
