The Pittsburgh Steelers now have competition for the best landing spot in the NFL.

Ever since Mike Tomlin stepped away from the Pittsburgh Steelers, the thought around the league is that the best job in the NFL, and one of the best in professional sports, just opened up.

Forget the rich culture and history of the Steelers organization. Forget the fact that the Steelers are historically one of the better teams when it comes to the NFL Draft, or that the city and fans live and breathe football.

You know that barring some sort of historically bad start, you will have the longest leash in the NFL, as the Steelers’ brass doesn’t like to fire a head coach at any point in their tenure. However, you have to realize the franchise has major questions at quarterback. That could be a holdup in someone’s decision-making, and it could cost the Steelers as they search for their next head coach following Monday’s news.

Let’s make something clear. Any head coaching candidate who has been interviewing for one of the league’s openings, looked down at their phone on Monday morning, and their eyes lit up. With the Bills’ decision to fire Sean McDermott, someone not only takes over a perennial playoff team with a solid roster but also becomes the head coach of a team led by Josh Allen.

The reigning NFL MVP is arguably the best pure player in the sport at this moment, and his play alone makes Buffalo the best landing spot of the remaining NFL jobs.

With the Steelers facing uncertainty at quarterback, any candidate weighing options is likely to lean toward Buffalo because of No. 17 in blue. So the question for the Steelers becomes, should they entertain hiring McDermott?

Should Steelers add Sean McDermott to their list of coaching candidates?

On the surface, a head coach who has won multiple division titles, been to the playoffs nearly every year, comes from a defensive background, and is still young in terms of coaching years would certainly pique the interest of the Steelers brass.

However, if you watched the Bills in recent years, you will see a team that, despite having arguably the best player in the sport, has come up short every time in the playoffs. McDermott never led the Bills to an AFC Championship or the Super Bowl, much less a title. He just won a playoff game last week and was fired on Monday because the team can’t get over the hump.

For a Steelers team searching for a playoff win, that doesn’t sound like the road this version of the team needs to travel, in my opinion.
