Cam Heyward has been a constant presence at defensive tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers for over a decade. During that time, Heyward has established himself as a leader, and that was put on display on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.
Rookie wide receiver George Pickens has been a key contributor to the Steelers this season. Against the Falcons, things were tough for Pickens, and in the third quarter, he only had one target, with no receptions.
Pickens was visibly upset on the sideline about his opportunities or lack thereof. So, Heyward put on his leadership hat and made sure Pickens didn't go off the rails too much.
Love to see it.
The Steelers are two games out of the final playoff spot in the AFC. With a month left in the season, the Steelers are essentially competing in playoff games every week, giving them minimal room for error, and Heyward knew he had to bring down the emotions of Pickens and keep him focused on the task at hand.
What Heyward did by keeping Pickens calm won't get a lot of attention. However, these types of moments are vital for a young player like Pickens and his understanding of how to be a professional, and Heyward is the perfect guy to get knowledge from in Pittsburgh.
