A very revealing statement.

Cam Heyward signed a new deal less than a year ago.

Yet here he is, back at the table looking for more, when the Pittsburgh Steelers are saying you still have two years on your current contract.

Well, it turns out there was a lot more to the story…

Cam Heyward warned the Steelers of this exact contract scenario

“I’m looking for my contract to be addressed. Honestly, [I’m] looking to be valued,” Heyward told Steelers media after Monday’s practice. “In my eyes. When I look around at my position, I think I’m like 22nd [highest paid] as a [defensive] tackle and I’m 36th as a [defensive] lineman. I know what I bring to this team and what I’m capable of, on and off the field. So it’s hard for me after the year I had to really justify playing at the number . . .

” . . .I understand I signed a contract last year, but to be completely honest with you, when I signed that, I told them, ‘when I have an All-Pro year, expect me to come back.’ And you can look at the contract and see what it was, but I think everybody kind of giggled a little bit. But in my head, I used it as motivation.

Heyward would go on to say that everything is on the table regarding these negotiations, including the possibility that he misses games if he doesn’t receive the desired raise before the regular season begins.

What’s integral here is that Heyward bet on himself, he won, and he’s now calling out the Steelers. The Steelers brass likely laughed off Heyward’s statement in passing, thinking that he would be happy with a three-year deal that allows him to retire a Steeler.

But for Heyward, all he did was go out and put up one of the best seasons of his career despite being 35 years old. It seems like everyone not named Cam Heyward inside of the Steelers organization was surprised that he was a Pro Bowler and first team All-Pro in 2025.

But Heyward has taken his words and put them into action. And now, he’s trying to make good on what he told the Steelers he would do, and they are reluctant. According to Heyward, this revised contract request goes back to February, and yet here we are with no reworked contract.

It all comes off what was the most dramatic offseason in Steelers history, and Heyward’s request was followed up by one of similar merit from Chris Boswell.

It’s safe to say the Steelers have some disgruntled employees, and it’s up to Omar Khan to find a way to make them happy again.

Oh, and he’s got about three weeks to do it.
