Omar Khan’s life gets a lot harder after Steelers kicker Chris Boswell piggybacks off Cam Heyward’s request with one of his own
He want’s one of his own.
Good things come in two’s right?
Well, not when those things are contract requests from two critical players on your roster.
But shortly after we found out that Cam Heyward is seeking a new contract, it turns out that Chris Boswell also wants one, continuing what has been a long offseason of negotiating for GM Omar Khan…
Chris Boswell wants a new contract
“In addition to Cam Heyward, All-Pro kicker Chris Boswell privately has been seeking a new contract from the Steelers, per source,” posted ESPN’s Adam Schefter on X-Twitter on Thursday. “Despite being voted first team All-Pro, Boswell was the AFC North’s lowest-paid kicker last season. Three years ago Boswell signed a contract that tied him with Justin Tucker as the NFL’s highest-paid kicker; but that market also has been reset the past two years.”
The theme here is clear. If you’re Cam Heyward and Chris Boswell, you have seen everyone get paid this offseason. Whether it was new players like DK Metcalf, Jalen Ramsey, and Aaron Rodgers, or if it was their own via T.J. Watt.
And still, the team has around $35 million in cap space and two players who have been among the best at their respective positions, not making anywhere close to that amount. In the case of Heyward, he has no guaranteed money left on his deal and is the 23rd highest-paid defensive lineman.
With Boswell, it was clear to many Steelers fans for years, but certainly after the Justin Tucker debacle, that he was not only the best kicker in the division, but arguably in the sport. Yet his contract ranks eighth in terms of total contract value, sitting at $20 million compared to the league leader, Harrison Butker of the Chiefs, at $25 million.
In 2024, Harrison Butker only played in 13 games and made 84 percent of his field goals. Boswell on the other hand, was a first-team All-Pro, Pro Bowler, and made 93 percent of his field goals. So similar to Cam Heyward, he has a lot of ground to stand on.
Will the Steelers decide to reward that? It remains to be seen.
