Details emerge surrounding Steelers WR DK Metcalf’s medical scare that resulted in a trip to the hospital following Ravens game
DK Metcalf’s big game was thwarted by a trip to the hospital on Sunday, and now we know why.
DK Metcalf had the best game of his Pittsburgh Steelers career on Sunday, torching the Baltimore Ravens for a season-high 148 receiving yards on 12 targets and seven receptions. But the postgame celebration was cut short for Metcalf.
Instead of joining his teammates on the flight back to Pittsburgh, Metcalf spent part of his victory Monday in a Baltimore hospital after reporting stomach issues that the team deemed severe enough to need extra medical insight. On Tuesday, Mike Tomlin revealed what exactly went on with Metcalf after the game.

“He got hit in the abdomen or stomach in-game. I think they gave him some basic over-the-counter remedies in-game or something like that, and it got probably progressively worse after the game,” said Tomlin via the Pittsburgh Steelers YouTube channel on Tuesday.
“And so, I’m appreciative of our medical experts. We just exercised an abundance of precaution. We didn’t want to get him in the air without having a complete understanding about what he was dealing with and they did a good job of that.”
It’s safe to say that the extra day of rest and preparation is somewhat of a saving grace for Metcalf. A Monday Night Football showdown with the Miami Dolphins, there are a ton of storylines given all the moves between the Steelers and Dolphins this offseason, but the loss of Metcalf in another huge game would overshadow everything. Coach Tomlin added details on Metcalf’s availability for Monday night.

“He’s moving in the right direction. I don’t think it’s going to jeopardize his availability at all, but it certainly may jeopardize his availability at the early portions of the week from a practice standpoint,” added Tomlin. “But thankfully, he’s fine. I’m appreciative of our medical staff and how quickly they acted in making sure that he was safe and taking care of him post-game.”
What stood out the most with the Ravens game is that Baltimore dared the Steelers, and more specifically Metcalf, to beat them in man coverage. Well, the aforementioned stat line and highlight reel show how that turned out.
Pittsburgh and Arthur Smith shouldn’t expect that treatment going forward however, meaning the onus will be on the coaching staff to find ways to get their star WR the ball, because good things happen when they do.
