DK Metcalf’s temper may have just dealt the Steelers an unexpected loss after dramatic road victory against Detroit Lions
DK Metcalf lost his cool on Sunday, and now he might lose a lot more.
There are two things we know to be true about DK Metcalf, and they both go back to before he was ever a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He can completely change the game with his speed, physicality, and explosiveness, and when he isn’t doing that, he’s prone to blowing up.
Metcalf has a history of losing his cool when teams get him off his game. Look no further than what Metcalf and fellow teammate Jalen Ramsey did when they played in the NFC West. It’s one thing to lose your cool and get physical with an opponent. It’s another when you do it with a fan in the stands.
DK Metcalf could face suspension after throwing a punch at a Lions fan
“I was watching it. He (Metcalf) came over because the fan in the stands was holding a (number) four Pittsburgh jersey,” reported Tracy Wolfson from the sideline of the game via the CBS broadcast. “He went over, and the fan said something to him. Obviously, Metcalf did not like what he said, and you saw the swipe there. No Steelers came over and mentioned anything to him. We’ll see if the league takes action.”
Well, as Jim Nantz would say, you can bet the NFL will look into this altercation, and it won’t be in Metcalf’s favor. The fan is probably in the wrong as well, and we await Metcalf’s part of the story. The bottom line, however, is that you can’t touch fans if you’re the player.
For one, even if the fan was a Steelers supporter, you shouldn’t be coming over during the game. Beyond that, once it’s clear that you have been baited, you have to take that on the chin. Now, the league is likely to suspend Metcalf for at least a game. That will cost him $277,777 and cost the Steelers their superstar WR against the Browns if it’s only one game.
We don’t have an exact precedent for this situation. The closest thing would be when a Buffalo Bills fan put his hands on Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson, who responded by pushing him down. Jackson was not fined or suspended, but he also didn’t instigate the situation.
We saw the NFL come down hard on Eagles DT Jalen Carter for spitting, the Steelers went through their own spitgate debacle between Ramsey and the suspension of Bengals WR Ja’Marr Chase, but a player throwing a punch at a fan just might take the cake for a wild 2025 season.
