NFL insider confirms Steelers fans’ worst nightmare at quarterback if Aaron Rodgers decides to retire or join another team
Adam Schefter has confirmed that the Steelers could be interested in a veteran QB option that doesn’t make a lot of sense.
While the Pittsburgh Steelers spent the first day of free agency plugging holes on their roster, the most important position in the sport still has a major question mark. Michael Pittman at wide receiver and Rico Dowdle at running back are great additions, but it doesn’t matter if the man under center is no good.
To this point, we have no new update on Aaron Rodgers or any other quarterback for that matter, ever since Rodgers appeared on the Pat McAfee Show. So it’s safe to say that many are living in hypotheses and speculation. Well, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter threw his two cents in, and the name he mentioned will be like nails on a chalkboard for many Steelers fans.
Adam Schefter floats Kirk Cousins as QB option if Aaron Rodgers doesn’t return
“Kirk Cousins will be released tomorrow by 4pm Eastern. At that time, he’ll become a free agent. It doesn’t sound like he’s in any rush go make a decision,” Schefter said Tuesday on the Pat McAfee Show via YouTube. “We saw it last year Philip Rivers. Kirk Cousins can sit back and wait. He’s made more money than anybody, and he has no reason to be in any rush to go take a job. I don’t think he’s rushing out to Pittsburgh.”
“Now, I will say this, if Aaron Rodgers decided all of a sudden not to come back to Pittsburgh… Could I see Kirk Cousins come into play as a potential option for the Steelers? Definitely at that point in time. Do I think he’s rushing into anything right now? Doesn’t sound that way, but let’s see how it shakes out.”
Why Kirk Cousins would be a massive mistake for the Steelers
To me, there are two clear options for the Steelers at quarterback: Aaron Rodgers and Will Howard. You either run it back one more time with the quarterback who played pretty good ball down the stretch, in an environment where he’s surronded by his former coaches, or you see what you have in Will Howard.
There are two notable prospects in the NFL Draft via Ty Simpson and Fernando Mendoza, but both of them will likely be gone come 21. Adding another aging, retreaded quarterback who also suffered a recent Achilles tear feels like a recipe for disaster.
Pittsburgh would be better off seeing what it has in Will Howard with a full camp and preseason of starting reps under his belt before making a decision ahead of a perceived to be better QB class in the 2027 draft.
Under no circumstances should the Steelers’ starting quarterback be Cousins, however.
