There has been much debate as of late regarding the career resume of Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin.
Some believe that Tomlin deserves to one day be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He has led the Steelers to a pair of appearances in the Super Bowl and also boasts a .631 winning percentage in regular season play.
Others like longtime sports radio personality Mark Madden do not see that Tomlin is deserving of one day having his name enshrined in Canton, Ohio. Madden recently said during an appearance on the "Breakfast with Benz" podcast that he does not believe that Tomlin "ever was a good coach," and that "he did a lot with somebody else’s players, leaders, and culture."
Former offensive lineman Trai Essex, who featured under the Tomlin-led Steelers for five seasons, took exception to Madden’s comments.
"Taking it too far," Essex wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. "You can be critical of Tomlin without downplaying his early success. 'Doing a lot with someone else’s players' is lost on me.
"He took over a team that went 8-8 and missed the playoffs. SB 2 years later. It’s ok to give credit AND criticism where it’s due."
Madden and Essex touched on a commonly debated topic regarding Tomlin’s early run with the Steelers. Many have downplayed Tomlin’s lone Super Bowl win with Pittsburgh, noting that he won with a roster that was essentially put together by his predecessor in former head coach Bill Cowher. Overall, 10 out of the 11 players who started for Pittsburgh on defense in Super Bowl 43 played under Cowher. And of course, Ben Roethlisberger, who starred under Cowher for three seasons, led Pittsburgh's offense in its Super Bowl 43-winning run.
For now, Tomlin sure has his sights set on leading the Steelers to the playoffs. Pittsburgh currently holds the No. 6 seed in the AFC playoff picture.
