The Pittsburgh Steelers formally introduced their 2026 free agency class on Friday, as Michael Pittman, Rico Dowdle, and Jamel Dean said hello to the media and held up black and gold jerseys for the first time.

But just because the first wave of NFL free agency is over, it doesn’t mean that the signings just stop coming. The Steelers need some depth along their offensive and defensive lines, and they solved the latter of those two issues on Friday evening.

Steelers are signing DL Sebastian Joseph-Day to a two-year deal worth $11 million

30-year-old Joseph-Day is a former Super Bowl champion with the Los Angeles Rams, having played for four different teams during his 7-year career before joining the Steelers. He’s not a flashy addition, but he’s what the Steelers need.

The starting line is solidified with Cam Heyward, Keeanu Benton, and of course, last year’s rookie sensation, Derrick Harmon. Heyward isn’t going anywhere after inking another contract with the Steelers this week, but he’s now approaching his late 30s.

I would never doubt Heyward, and it’s not a stretch to say that both statistically and via the eye test, his 2024 and 2025 campaigns were among the best of his career, but a little insurance never hurt. For more on what Joseph-Day brings to the Steelers, here is some analysis from the man who watched him up close the last two years, Easton Freeze of A to Z Sports, Tennessee Titans.

What are the Steelers getting from Sebastian Joseph-Day?

“Sebastian Joseph-Day’s departure from Tennessee has everything to do with the Saleh regime coming in and changing the look of this defense. Saleh and adjusting the personnel to match his transition from the 3-4 Tennessee ran in 2025, to the 4-3 his system is known for. He’s also been on a rampage of bringing him “his” guys to build out the DL depth, which has pushed out really useful players like Joseph-Day and Jihad Ward.”

“Pittsburgh is getting a version of SJD who is still versatile enough to be useful on all three downs if needed, but excels on early downs and is a good run blocker. As a rotational third, he’s exactly the kind of player you want. He’s a strong presence in the locker room too.” – Freeze

Final grade: B

For years, the Steelers have aimed to model their roster construction after the Philadelphia Eagles. One of the staples of that defensive line is its depth. They can be six, maybe even seven deep when you include EDGE rushers in terms of who plays valuable snaps.

Beyond making sure that Heyward is fresh and ready to go for the biggest reps, signing Joseph-Day allows Pittsburgh to have a proven veteran who can play up and down the interior, no questions asked.

Signing him to 11/2 is a little rich given the other moves that Khan and Co. have made, so I’ll knock it down a peg to a B, but it’s a great move overall for the Steelers.
