NFL insider exposes that Steelers GM Omar Khan was outbid for a big-name wide receiver hours before 2025 NFL trade deadline
Khan and Co. couldn’t get it done.
The 2025 NFL trade deadline has come and gone, and the Pittsburgh Steelers sat by and watched the rest of the league make moves. For a team whose actions all offseason proved it was viewing this year as a chance to contend, the lack of activity will likely be seen as a major disappointment in the eyes of many Steelers fans.
The Steelers are first in the AFC North at 5-3 with a two-game lead over the Baltimore Ravens. They just beat the league’s best team in terms of record Sunday, and they are razor-thin at the WR position, even with the addition of Marquez Valdes-Scantling.
And to their credit, they were in on a big-name WR who they had their eye on for weeks, but when it came down to it, Omar Khan and the front office couldn’t pull the trigger.
Steelers outbid by Jaguars for WR Jakobi Meyers
“Pittsburgh expressed some interest in Jakobi Meyers, but obviously Jacksonville really stepped up to get something done here,” said ESPN’s Adam Schefter on the Pat McAfee Show during an appearance on Tuesday. “Those are the two teams, I think, that really wanted to add Meyers to their roster.”
What made matters worse is that just hours before the deadline, Mike Tomlin hinted at a big trade when being asked if last week’s acquisition of Kyle Dugger was it, or if the Steelers had something else up their sleeves.
“You said four o’clock? So we got a few more hours. We’ll see what happens. I like to go shopping,” said Mike Tomlin during his weekly presser on the Steelers YouTube channel on Tuesday.
“I just know that you know if you’re trending in the right direction, if you got the desire to to be in this thing as the road gets narrow, usually you’re open to adding talent that can that can assist you, whether it’s attrition-based or whether it’s just areas where you fall short, and that’s something that I think some of the competitive teams are interested in year in and year out. It’s just a natural component of this thing.”
As Tomlin has said in the past, the NFL is a results business. You don’t get an A for effort, especially not when said efforts were bested by other teams in the AFC, who are also vying for a playoff spot.
Rashid Shaheed went to the Seattle Seahawks, Meyers to the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Miami Dolphins held firm on Jaylen Waddle.
Meaning what you see is what you get with the Steelers’ WR corps going forward.
