The debacle that was spitage has had more twists and turns than a Hollywood script at this point. It started when Pittsburgh Steelers DB Jalen Ramsey was ejected for throwing a punch at Cincinnati Bengals WR Ja’Marr Chase, a move he was ultimately fined for.

That turned into a he-said-she-said situation, with the league siding with Jalen Ramsey over Chase after video evidence proved that Ramsey was in fact, telling the truth and that Chase lied about spitting on him.

But on Monday, Chase finally released an apology after forfeiting a game check over $500,000. Only, he didn’t even mention Ramsey by name.

Ja’Marr Chase releases an insincere apology after spitting on Jalen Ramsey

“Please know I am speaking from my heart when I say I take full responsibility for my actions during last Sunday’s game at Pittsburgh,” Chase wrote in a post on Instagram. “What I did was wrong. The circumstances don’t matter. My passion for the game is no excuse. There’s zero place in our sport or in life for that level of disrespect.

I want to personally apologize to everyone within the Pittsburgh Steelers organization. I let my emotions in the moment get the better of me. I can only hope and trust you know none of it represents who I am not as a competitor, teammate, or person. I also want to apologize to my coaches, teammates, and organization for not meeting my own standards as a leader of this team.”

How do you spit on a player, get suspended for doing as much, and then release a letter saying you’re sorry, but you don’t mention the player by name? Chase might need to hire some new PR, because that’s as disingenuous of an apology letter as you will find.

I understand that they are opponents, rivals, and ultimate competitors. But when Chase spat on Ramsey, he crossed a line. A line that goes beyond football. He tried the manhood of Ramsey, and as Mike Tomlin said via the Steelers YouTube channel, “I have no message if someone spits in your face. Do what comes natural.”

The two teams won’t see each other again until 2026, barring a miraculous winning streak from the Bengals, and that’s probably a good thing given how recent the actions were. It’s going to be a must-watch game the next time these two face off.
