James Harrison reveals the real reason behind Joey Porter’s personal attack on former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger
James Harrison had some choice words for Joey Porter Sr. and his take on Ben Roethlisberger.
It was a little over a week ago when the Pittsburgh Steelers’ world was set on fire by some of the most inflammatory comments you will ever see from a teammate. Joey Porter Sr., appearing on Cam Heyward’s Not Just Football podcast, called out Steelers ledgendary quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.
Porter went as far as to call Big Ben a bad teammate and a bad person, saying that Roethlisberger should never speak about Steelers business. That created a chain reaction among former teammates of Big Ben’s, with some siding in favor of the future Hall of Famer, and others agreeing with Porter. Well, James Harrison spoke up on his podcast this week, shining light on why this all happened in the first place.
James Harrison says Joey Porter and Ben Roethlisberger have personal issues
“Joey [Porter] has a personal issue with Ben, and he was the rabbit with the gun,” said Harrison on his podcast Deebo and Joe on YouTube. “He took his shot because he doesn’t see Ben as a brother, okay? And me, personally, I do not think Ben is a bad teammate, because I have a good relationship with Ben. I can say this because I talk to this man, but seven [Ben Roethlisberger] could be an expletive.”
“When Ben came in, this man went 13-1 as a rookie, okay, starting. The team was 15-1. In his second season, he won a Super Bowl, the youngest quarterback to ever do it at 23 [years old]. That’s when Seven was born. Okay, he became the youngest quarterback to ever win a Super Bowl. Hell, yeah, that’s going to stroke [his] ego and give [him] delusions of grandeur. But over time, he has matured and grown up, and you don’t value the same things you did at 23 that you do at 30.”
Big Ben was never noted for being a lead-by-example player, or someone others in the locker room looked to for guidance. He was as rough and tumble, backyard football as they come. But he was also the definition of a guy you could have a beer with. For whatever reason, that wasn’t the relationship he had with Porter, but that doesn’t mean his stance is some universal sentiment on Big Ben as a teammate.
“That was just a pure out attack on Ben’s character,” added Harrison. “He went on it because he obviously has a personal issue within that hasn’t been resolved.”
Waiting on Ben Roethlisberger’s response to Porter’s comments
As of publish, Ben Roethlisberger’s most recent podcast on his YouTube channel is two weeks old. When he returns to the microphone, the elephant in the room will have to be adressed and perhaps Big Ben reveals the personal differences between him and Porter.
For now, we wait and see.
