Steelers game in Ireland just received a new wrinkle following massive injury news that seemingly came out of nowhere

The last thing the Pittsburgh Steelers need to be doing is looking ahead. A road game against the New England Patriots is on deck for a pair of 1-1 teams that will be fighting to stay above .500. But after that, the Steelers will be facing the Minnesota Vikings in Ireland in Week 4.
However, following the surprise announcement from HC Kevin O’Connell that their starting quarterback, J.J. McCarthy, has a sprained ankle, it appears that the Steelers will be taking on Carson Wentz, throwing a wrench in their international plans.
Steelers likely to face Vikings backup QB Carson Wentz in Week 4
“Things got really weird for the Vikings on Monday when Kevin O’Connell announced that J.J. McCarthy would likely miss Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals, followed by the Adam Schefter report that he will likely miss two to four weeks with the injury. As things stand, the Vikings are likely going to start Carson Wentz in Dublin against the Steelers.
“Is that a good thing? Well, he’s going to give you a baseline level of success that we hadn’t seen with McCarthy. He has plus arm talent to make every throw and can move with his legs. However, the issues that have plagued him for years probably aren’t gone for Wentz. If the offensive line doesn’t get healthy and perform better, Wentz could be in a brutal spot going into the Steelers game.”
– Tyler Forness, A to Z Sports Minnesota
Tyler raises a great point on Wentz and his potential within the Vikings’ offense. He doesn’t have the ceiling that McCarthy does, obviously. However, his experience in the league could perhaps raise the floor of a unit that has had a rocky start in 2025.
For reference, Wentz is 1-1 all-time against the Pittsburgh Steelers, with both games coming against the black and gold when he was a member of the Philadelphia Eagles. He lit up the Steelers defense for over 300 passing yards and two TDs while completing an absurd 74.2 percent of his passes against Pittsburgh in 2016.
A lot has changed since then, but with the state of the Steelers’ defense right now, there is a chance he puts up a big game yet again, and we receive a shootout in the land of green.
