It's starting to feel likely that the Pittsburgh Steelers will bring offensive coordinator Matt Canada back next season, much to the dismay of fans.
And after hearing comments from Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett this week, it feels even more likely.
Pickett appeared on teammate Cam Heyward's podcast this week and he gave his thoughts on Canada. It sounds like the young quarterback wants his offensive coordinator back in 2023.
"Coach Canada recruited me back at Pitt," said Pickett. "So I've known Coach Canada for a long time — since about 2015. So we have a great relationship. If you're the guy (starting quarterback) you spend a lot more time with the OC. So early on, I didn't have as much time [with Canada]."
"When I became the starter, we spent a lot of time together," added Pickett. "He picks my brain on what I like. And throughout the game, asking me to rank plays and just likes to see the game from the quarterback's point of view. [He] keeps things different. And I think we really caught stride after that bye week."
"We figured out what it's going to take for us to win and what that recipe looks like. So we continue to grow as a team and grow as an offense. We just need to take that jump into year two. We need more explosive plays. He's doing a great job of trying to figure out what we need to do to get those and put up some more points. I'm excited to continue to work with him this offseason."
Earlier this month there was a report that the team would get Pickett's thoughts on Canada before making any sort of decision.
Based on Pickett's comments and the fact that he said he's looking forward to working with Canada this offseason, I'd say there's a high chance that Pittsburgh will bring back the heavily criticized offensive coordinator for a third season.
Maybe that's the right move. Maybe Pickett and Canada will find a groove. However, I understand if it's a move that frustrates fans after watching the Steelers' offense struggle to score points in 2022.
Continuity for a quarterback, though, is important. And it seems like that might be what Pittsburgh is going for with this looming offensive coordinator decision.
