For now, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett is chasing Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow in the AFC North.
Burrow has already been where Pickett wants to go — Super Bowl appearance, multiple AFC North division titles, and two AFC championship game appearances.
That's why Pickett is looking to make a Burrow-like jump in his second season in Pittsburgh.
Pickett told the Steelers' official team website this week that he's planning to take a big jump in year two.
"There are so many things I’m going to go through here in this offseason in order for me to take that big jump in Year Two, which I’m expecting myself to do," said Pickett. "There were so many new things coming in this year that you can’t even put into this one interview that you’re going through as a rookie quarterback in the NFL. I just got so much more comfortable from the first day I walked in here to the last day of the season. It’s like night and day."
"I felt like I’ve been here for two or three years versus one season, how much time I’ve been around everybody," added Pickett. "So having that groundwork, that base, the work in the offseason. I’m really excited."
Players can't make big jumps unless they're deliberate in their intentions to make that jump. Pickett clearly is aware of what he needs to do to take a big step forward in 2023 and he's putting in the work this offseason to make it happen.
Pickett can reach the same level as Burrow — the young Steelers quarterback has many of the same traits when it comes to leading. Just because he didn't come out of college with the same amount of hype doesn't mean that Pickett has a ceiling lower than Burrow's — quite the opposite, actually.
Obviously, Pickett has to prove he can make that big jump. But Steelers fans have no reason to doubt that he can.
