The Steelers signed cornerback Patrick Peterson to a two-year deal earlier this offseason.
Peterson, a former first-round pick by the Arizona Cardinals (2011), is an eight-time Pro-Bowler who brings plenty of experience to Pittsburgh's defense.
Peterson recently appeared on The Jim Rome Show and he suggested that Pittsburgh's defense is where it needs to be to win a championship. According to Peterson, the 2023 season will come down to how Pickett plays for the Steelers during his second season in the NFL.
“I do, and what it’s going to come down to is we have all the pieces that we need on defense,” said Peterson (via NBC Sports). “We know defense wins championships. We have talent across the board on the offensive side of the ball. I believe the front office did a great job of getting what we needed in the draft as far as getting Broderick [Jones] in the first round, a left tackle, young pup who you should expect to see play a lot. You added Allen Robinson, you got Diontae Johnson, you got George Pickens, you got Najee [Harris]."
"You know it’s all going to come down to how well Kenny can play and can he put the ball where it needs to go," added Peterson. "I believe he is a guy that we can rely on, a guy that we can count on. Now it’s all going to fall on him if he can go out there and show us what he’s capable of doing.”
Peterson admits he has plenty of faith in Pickett, but that's still a lot of pressure to put on a young quarterback. But then again, this is a quarterback-driven league. And in most cases, it goes without saying that a team's success is dependent on strong quarterback play.
It'll be interesting to see how Pickett responds to the added pressure. If he's the guy that everyone in Pittsburgh thinks he is, then he'll have no issues playing at a high level in 2023.
Steelers WR George Pickens gives quote about Kenny Pickett that will make Pittsburgh fans smile
The Pittsburgh Steelers may have something special in a couple of rookies. Pittsburgh rookie wide receiver George Pickens and rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett appear to be building a great connection together.
