Latest update on Aaron Rodgers’ future proves the Steelers quarterback saga should be ending sooner rather than later
We should have clarity sooner rather than later in Pittsburgh when it comes to the quarterback position.
The Pittsburgh Steelers remain in a holding pattern at the quarterback position. As their roster currently stands, the only quarterbacks that are slated to be back in Pittsburgh in 2026 are Will Howard and Mason Rudolph.
While we have been there and done that with Rudolph and the hype surrounding Howard has reached a fever pitch, I’m not sure the Steelers are ready to hand the keys to an unproven quarterback. So what about veterans? More specifically, veterans who have a familiarity with the franchise, like Aaron Rodgers?
Well, we just got one step closer to a resolution after Super Bowl Sunday.
Odds that Aaron Rodgers returns to the Steelers are increasing
Tom Pelissero reported during NFL Network’s Super Bowl Sunday pregame show that Rodgers and newly named head coach Mike McCarthy have been in contact. We know that the Steelers hired Rodgers’ old offensive line coach from his time with the Green Bay Packers, James Campen, who Rodgers has spoken highly of in the past.
We also know that, barring a few games where Rodgers was dealing with a bad thumb, he looked pretty good in 2025. To be candid, the only area of his game that has eroded is his mobility. I don’t expect that to return in 2026, but his arm and, more importantly, his brain, are good enough to carry him through another season.
Rodgers leaves the 2025 season feeling refreshed
“Speaking of Rodgers, he has emerged from the 2025 season refreshed. One source I spoke to said Rodgers is in a much better place coming out of his year with the Steelers compared with his previous two years with the Jets. He greatly valued his experience in Pittsburgh, and teammates raved about him, both publicly and in exit meetings with the team. The Steelers have been open to a Rodgers return since early in the season, and I don’t sense that has changed. The Steelers’ combination of head coach Mike McCarthy and offensive coordinator Brian Angelichio makes the transition seamless.” – Jeremy Fowler, ESPN
In a year where, outside of Fernando Mendoza, there is no lock at the quarterback position in the NFL Draft, and with a free agent class that is highlighted by a career backup, Rodgers is probably the Steelers’ best bet, and they seem to be doubling down after a year together in Pittsburgh.
