Steelers sign former AFCN rival as Will Howard’s replacement for the time being following a broken bone in the rookie’s hand
A new arm in camp.
The most anticipated player on the Pittsburgh Steelers roster heading into preseason was rookie quarterback Will Howard.
Unfortunately, Howard is likely to miss the preseason and is out for Saturday’s opener.
So on Thursday, the team signed his replacement and a former first-round pick along the offensive line…
Steelers sign QB Logan Woodside, OL Andrus Peat
Woodside was drafted to the Bengals back in 2018, but he brings familiarity to the Steelers quarterback room. He played under offensive coordinator Arthur Smith in both Tennessee and Atlanta.
“He just got here,” said Coach Tomlin in his pregame presser on Thursday. “I know that he has a past experience with Arthur [Smith] and so I’m not gonna close the door on it, but we’ll see.”
Woodside is the headliner as he figures to play a good amount before Will Howard returns. In reality, however, barring a few jaw-dropping performances in the preseason, he’s likely going to be a camp arm with the potential to make the practice squad.
The intriguing signing here is Andrus Peat. A former first-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, Peat was a three-time Pro Bowler who played nine years in New Orleans before a stint in Vegas in 2024. The 31-year-old veteran doesn’t figure to be a starter in Pittsburgh, but he’s the best depth signing you can ask for this time of year, especially when backup LT Calvin Anderson has been among a group of Steelers sidelined with injury.
“I think with each passing day, man, I’m seeing signs of growth and development, but that’s to be expected,” added Coach Tomlin about the offensive line. “I like their general approach. I like their level of conditioning. I like their commitment to continued conditioning. I love the way that they’re communicating. It’s a work in progress, but so far so good.”
