Steelers miss out on WR with ties to Aaron Rodgers after he chose to sign with an NFC team that missed the 2024 playoffs instead
The search continues.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are still in the middle of an ongoing search for their WR No.2.
Yes, I know what the staff has said about Calvin Austin III, Roman Wilson, and whoever else, but their actions have shown you they want and need another proven playmaker in that room.
There was a thought that one name that hit the market would make a lot of sense, given his ties to Aaron Rodgers, but he chose the San Francisco 49ers instead.
Marquez Valdes-Scantling chooses 49ers over Steelers
MVS made a lot of sense for the Steelers. Not only did he play with Rodgers for four years with the Green Bay Packers, but he also offers another vertical threat on the perimeter of the offense. A big game hunter, MVS might not always catch it, but when he does, you can expect a big play, evidenced by his career average of 17.4 yards per reception.
“Aaron has taught me so much on and off the field,” Valdes-Scantling told Zach Gelb of NFL Network in 2024. “He’s a big advocate of mental health and how you approach life, not just football. The things that he’s gone through over the years, he shares that and kind of just lets you know, like, ‘hey, I’m human too’ … Just for him to be able to open that up and be a great friend to me, not even just a teammate, I’m forever indebted to him. . .
” . . .Man, he’s one of the greatest you’ll ever find. He cares more about his teammates than about the game of football. You know, I think that’s something that people really don’t understand. Because people get this perception of him that he’s this diva or all about himself, that’s the furthest thing from the truth.”
So why did he choose the 49ers over the Steelers? That is probably due to money. We know the Steelers tend to low-ball teams and players. That could be part of the reason why Jakobi Meyers isn’t a Pittsburgh Steeler yet.
In other words, the search continues for Pittsburgh. At some point, it might have to just roll with what it has, but it is a sprained DK Metcalf ankle away from one of the worst/most unproven units in the league.
For a team with Super Bowl aspirations, that feels like a major oversight.
