Roman Wilson’s future with the Steelers is suddenly a lot clearer following telling comments from head coach Mike McCarthy

Mike McCarthy isn’t ruling out a big year for Roman Wilson, and certainly isn’t ruling out his future with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

A lot of things change when a new coaching staff comes into a locker room. The most obvious is, of course, the roster turnover. Take the Pittsburgh Steelers, for instance. Mike McCarthy and the rest of the staff have no allegiance to anyone on the current roster.

That includes recent draft picks like Kaleb Johnson and Roman Wilson, both of whom have underperformed relative to their pre-draft evaluations and value. But we already know how Coach McCarthy feels about Kaleb Johnson, and it’s safe to say that he mirrors that opinion with Wilson.

Mike McCarthy is not ready to give up on Roman Wilson

“New system, fresh start. I’m hoping he’s one of those guys that would benefit from it. I was impressed talking football with him. There’s a lot of people that have a lot of love for him in the building,” said McCarthy at the annual league meetings.

Will Roman Wilson finally have a role in year 3?

If you flashback to the 2024 season, Roman Wilson is having an excellent start to camp when he turns his ankle during a practice, sprains it, and ultimately misses the rest of camp, preseason, and the start of the regular season.

By the time he was ready to return, reports indicated that Wilson was struggling to hop on the moving train that is the NFL’s regular season, and he also suffered a hamstring injury.

So his rookie year was essentially a redshirt. Then came 2025, when sources told A to Z Sports that the Steelers were treating the season as his actual rookie year. Well, Wilson was able to get on the field, but the Steelers told you how they really felt about him later in the season.

Despite not having DK Metcalf in Week 17 with the AFC North Championship on the line, Wilson was inactive. The likes of Adam Thilen, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Scotty Miller got helmets over Wilson.

Sure, maybe part of that was due to Aaron Rodgers and him not having trust in younger players, but it’s been a bumpy start to say the least for Wilson. We’ll see if that changes in year three.
