Aaron Rodgers could be one step closer to making a final decision following latest comments from Steelers HC Mike McCarthy
If Aaron Rodgers wants to be back with the Steelers in 2026, he will have to make a decision sooner rather than later.
The Pittsburgh Steelers introduced Mike McCarthy as their head coach on Tuesday, and it came with a lot. Sitting next to owner Art Rooney II and GM Omar Khan, McCarthy got emotional, and you can see what becoming the head coach of his hometown team means to him.
But there was a lot of substance to what McCarthy said as well, including his plans for the quarterback position and Aaron Rodgers.
Mike McCarthy is open to having Aaron Rodgers back in 2026
When Art Rooney addressed the media following Mike Tomlin’s decision to step down as the head coach, he was asked what that meant for Aaron Rodgers’ future, and he made it clear that Rodgers was only in Pittsburgh because of Coach Tomlin.
Well, then there were rumblings about a potential Mike McCarthy hire, and that obviously turned out to be true. So what does it mean for Aaron Rodgers?
“I mean, definitely. I mean, I don’t see why you wouldn’t,” said McCarthy via the Steelers YouTube channel. “But I think just like anything, knowing Aaron long enough, going through seasons, I think when players, to see Mel Blount here, I mean, when guys are up at that stage of their career, they need to step away and decompress. I think that’s very important.”
“The game is so emotional, what these men commit to and what they put into it. I think that time away is important. And I have spoken to Aaron and so that’s really where we are there. But I was able to sit back and watch the games. I watch most of the Pittsburgh games on TV, and I thought he was a great asset for the team.”
The Steelers will be in yet another waiting game for Aaron Rodgers, but whether it was McCarthy or Art Rooney, it is very clear that the Steelers won’t be waiting as long as last offseason.
