The 2025-2026 Pittsburgh Steelers were supposed to be different. After winning four of their last five, heading into the playoffs as healthy as they had been since Week 1, and with a home playoff game for the first time since 2020, the Steelers were riding a wave of momentum.

That wave came crashing down on top of the franchise via a 30-6 loss to the Houston Texans. Just like that, the offseason is here — and the questions about the future of the franchise are louder than ever. Mike Tomlin knows that, and he has an answer for the fans.

Mike Tomlin says talk is cheap after Steelers’ loss to Texans

“Words are cheap. It’s about what you do or you don’t do,” said Tomlin after the game when asked what he would tell Steelers fans. “People talk too much in our business. You either do or you don’t.”

The truth is, Mike Tomlin and the Steelers have been talking for years now. They have been talking about being one step closer to hoisting their seventh Lombardi for a decade, and yet its’ been nine years since the team won a playoff game. In fact, Mike Tomlin tied former Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis for the most consecutive playoff losses in the history of the league with seven after Monday.

So to Tomlin’s point, the talk is now officially cheap. The tenured head coach wouldn’t speak directly to his future, saying that he didn’t want to look at the big picture after Monday night. He didn’t have to. That quote, along with his tone during that entire presser, proved that Mike Tomlin is tired.

Tired of the same old result. Tired of having to answer the same questions at the end of every season. Tired of moving on to preparing for the Senior Bowl, opposed to the Super Bowl, come the end of January. It was the type of statement and press conference that led you to believe that the Steelers may finally take a long look in the mirror this offseason.

Aaron Rodgers goes to bat for Mike Tomlin

“Mike T has had more success than damn near anybody in the league for the last 19, 20 years. And more than that, though, when you have the right guy and the culture is right, you don’t think about making a change,” said Rodgers. “When I first got in the league, there wouldn’t be conversation about if [Mike Tomlin] were on the ‘hot seat.’”

The bottom line is that everyone in Pittsburgh has to think long and hard about what happens next for the Steelers, and that may lead to some uncomfortable conversations, as the product on the field hasn’t been good enough in a long time.
