Mike Tomlin’s latest move confirms the Steelers’ hopes of getting something in return for his departure have gone up in flames
Mike Tomlin is going to be back in the spotlight, but it won’t be on a sideline.
When Mike Tomlin dropped a bombshell in a team meeting that he would not be returning to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a 20th consecutive season, it sent shockwaves not only through the locker room but the entire NFL.
Many assumed that a coach who spent the better part of his 54 years on Earth in a dark room watching film, wouldn’t be able to stay away from the game he loves for very long. However, it was clear in the coming days and weeks that Tomlin needed/needs a break. From the Steelers standpoint, they hoped and potentially still hope that his break only lasts a year, but that may no longer be the case after this week’s news.
Mike Tomlin hires a sports media agent
“Mike Tomlin is testing the TV market waters. The former Steelers head coach has signed with longtime sports media agent Sandy Montag’s agency, sources told Front Office Sports. Montag and former sportscaster-turned-agent Alex Flanagan will represent Tomlin in potential contract talks with networks and streamers, sources said. Flanagan, the former anchor/reporter for NBC Sports and NFL Network, led the signing and will handle Tomlin’s day-to-day representation. The Montag Group could not be reached for comment.” – Front Office Sports
What does Mike Tomlin’s decision to join the media mean for the Steelers?
Tomlin was (and technically is) under contract with the Steelers through the 2027 season. That means Pittsburgh has the ability to retain/refuse Tomlin’s coaching rights from any other team in the league. Simply put, if, say, the Arizona Cardinals wanted to hire Tomlin, they would have to part ways with draft capital.
We most recently saw that in the case of the Denver Broncos, who had to trade with the New Orleans Saints for head coach Sean Payton. Needless to say, the Steelers could easily attain a first-round pick for coach Tomlin.
Perhaps they still do if he only takes a year off and returns ahead of the 2027 season. However, Tomlin is not only going to be a high-priced commodity in the analysis business, he will also likely crush his role and want to stick around. 20 years of Tomlinisms now broadcast for the world to see will only endear him with the public and media conglomerates even more.
