It’s about time.

The majority of the Steelers’ 2025 offseason was held up by one player: Aaron Rodgers.

Rodgers would go months from the first time we heard serious talk of him joining the team, to him actually signing and showing up to minicamp.

Yet, the whole time, the Steelers seemed confident, if not complacent, about their plan at quarterback. Now we know why….

Mike Tomlin hints that he knew Aaron Rodgers was coming to Pittsburgh

“His why,” Mike Tomlin told Ryan Clark and the Pivot pod when asked why he still believes in Aaron Rodgers. “You know this dude been doing it 21 years, man. Four time MVP, all of that stuff. I just wanted to know why, why does the fire still burn? What is his agenda? Those are some of the conversations that we had in the spring, and I just got real comfortable with his why . . .

” . . . All he wants to do is win. All he wants to do is have fun within the game. He wants to be a component of the process of development for young players. Everything that we talked about through our conversations in the spring, I’m watching him live out right now in this training camp setting. I believed him when he said it, but it’s fun to watch it play out. I think that’s why I’m excited. I think that’s why I was comfortable. And you’re right, I knew something.”

The key part of that quote was the very end. The “you’re right, I knew something,” stems from Clark’s question about whether he knew Rodgers was coming, and that’s why he didn’t draft a quarterback.

And there you have it, the closest thing to a confession you will get.

Quite honestly, it only makes sense. Every phone call, meeting with a media member or chat with league sources to A to Z Sports ended with optimism that Rodgers would sign there. We had the meeting between Rodgers and the team that both sides tried to keep private, the throwing session between Rodgers and Metcalf, and subtle gestures from Art Rooney and Mike Tomlin throughout the process, all of which pointed to Rodgers in Black and Gold.

But now we know that the Steelers knew that was the case all along. So for future reference, if the Steelers front office looks like they are sitting by on their hands, I think they have enough equity built up to show they have a plan.
