Mike Tomlin takes a direct shot at Browns GM Andrew Berry after ‘shocking’ trade that makes the Steelers’ lives a lot harder
Mike Tomlin let Andrew Berry have it after trading Joe Flacco to the Bengals.
If there is any head coach in the league who still holds Joe Flacco in very high regard, it would be Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Tomlin admitted earlier this year that he emphasized to his team ahead of last year’s Colts game not to let Joe Flacco get in the game.
He was right, as Flacco replaced Anthony Richardson and the Steelers fell to Indianapolis. And after seeing that the Browns had benched Flacco for Dillon Gabriel earlier this season, Tomlin thought he escaped Joe Flacco, likely for the final time.
But then came the shocking trade that sent Flacco from the Browns to the Bengals. Well, it’s safe to say that Tomlin wasn’t a fan of that trade.
Mike Tomlin rips Browns GM Andrew Berry for trading Joe Flacco to the Bengals
“You know, to be honest, it was shocking to me,” said Tomlin when asked his opinion of the Joe Flacco trade. “Andrew Berry must be a lot smarter than me or us, because it doesn’t make sense to me to trade a quarterback that you think enough of to make your opening day starter, to a division opponent that’s hurting in that area, but that’s just my personal feelings.”
Mike Tomlin has a career record of 14-13 all-time against Joe Flacco. The two first faced off back in 2008, and now their rivalry will renew on Thursday for the 28th time. Mike Tomlin has coached against Flacco as far back as when he won a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens and as recently as last year with the Colts.
He knows how bad that Bengals offense looked with Jake Browning at the helm, and he knows how much better they looked on Sunday, just days after Flacco joined that operation. So make no mistake about it, Tomlin knows that his team is potentially walking into a trap game.
And now, because of Andrew Berry’s decision-making, that game just got a lot harder than Tomlin and the Steelers once envisioned. But if the Steelers are serious contenders, they will meet the moment on a short week and head into a mini bye at 5-1.
If the Steelers are serious, They won’t play with their food ahead of a daunting stretch that features games against the Green Bay Packers, Indianapolis Colts, and Los Angeles Chargers. These next four weeks will tell a lot about what the Steelers project to be in 2025.
