Regardless, many folks and fans of Pittsburgh would say that Watt headlines their defense when healthy. He brings unbelievable energy to the unit, and he is extremely productive. Few other edge rushers have the ability to take over a football game quite like Watt can in today's NFL.
According to a new NFL.com article by Bucky Brooks, he isn't their "building block" for the team's future, though. That title went to Fitzpatrick.
Despite playing as a traditional center fielder in the Steelers' scheme, Fitzpatrick is the versatile safety most defensive coaches covet in the secondary. The All-Pro displays cornerback-like agility and cover skills while possessing the high IQ and positional flexibility to play as a slot corner or hybrid linebacker if needed. In a league trending toward positionless football on each side of the ball, Fitzpatrick's versatility and ball skills (19 career interceptions, including a season-high six picks in 2022) make him an intriguing building block for defensive coordinator Teryl Austin. — Brooks
it's an intriguing take to choose Minkah over Watt. Watt is 28, while Fitzpatrick is just 26. That may have played a major role in his choice. Not to mention, Fitzpatrick has been a turnover machine during his time with the Steelers. That makes a massive difference when evaluating top-end talent. Additionally, Fitzpatrick has stayed relatively healthy during his entire time with Pittsburgh. Watt has battled some injuries, but that doesn't take away from his importance on their defense.
It'll be interesting to see which player the Steelers choose to build around over the next couple of years – or if they keep both in town.
