NFL insider confirms suspicion surrounding Mike Tomlin’s future as head coach of the Steelers after latest losing streak
If the Rooney family is known for anything, it’s loyalty, and that doesn’t appear to be changing.
The noise surrounding Mike Tomlin’s future with the Pittsburgh Steelers has steadily been on the rise for the past half-decade. But following a lifeless showing against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, that noise may have reached it’s crescendo.
Between audible chants from fans inside Acrisure saying “fire Tomlin,” T.J. Watt saying he doesn’t know how to fix things, Aaron Rodgers calling out teammates, and James Harrison openly calling for Mike Tomlin’s firing, it feels like this could be the season where the Steelers bottom out and make some real change.
But according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, that’s not exactly in the cards.
Steelers owner Art Rooney has no plans to move on from Mike Tomlin
“Even discussing firing Mike Tomlin is completely ridiculous. Based on my understanding of the situation, let me lay it out for you. Mike Tomlin is one of the best coaches in the NFL. If he ever became available, he’d be snatched up in literally a matter of no time if he wanted to,” said Rapoport on NFL Network.
“He’s a Super Bowl champion. They make the playoffs every year, most consecutive non-losing seasons basically ever. Now, I don’t see any circumstances where Mike Tomlin gets fired by Art Rooney. I really just don’t see it, based on my understanding of what he’s done, that relationship. His meaning to the entire organization.”
There has been a major disconnect between the national media and the way that fans feel about Mike Tomlin for half a decade now. Outside of Pittsburgh, Tomlin is viewed as one of the best coaches in the NFL. Inside the 412, fans have grown tired of hearing about consecutive non-losing seasons.
They don’t care what happens in the regular season, when the standard is winning Super Bowls, and right now, the Steelers are approaching a decade without a playoff win. The fact that those words just came from my keyboard is unacceptable.
This is not the Cleveland Browns or the Jacksonville Jaguars. This is one of the most popular sports franchises in the world. A team tied with the New England Patriots for the most Lombardi Trophies.
Yet here they sit 6-6, just scraping and clawing to find a way to stay above .500 and somehow win the division. Which, on the off chance they do, the Steelers might as well book their flights to Cabo for mid-January, because I can assure you they will be one and done if they play how they have the last two weeks.
