The NFL has rescinded its $48,556 fine to Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jaylen Warren, as noted by the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Warren was fined for what the NFL initially deemed was an unnecessary roughness violation during the second quarter of the Steelers’ road win over the Los Angeles Rams in Week 7. As shown below, Warren stepped up to the plate and blocked Rams pass rusher Michael Hoecht on a pass play.
Warren was not issued a flag after the play.
The NFL’s call to fine Warren for the block caused an uproar among multiple current and former players. For one, Steelers outside linebacker T.J. Watt said that it was "ridiculous" that Warren was handed such a hefty fine for it, noting that "it's extremely egregious the amount of money that a guy like that's been fined." Warren, who is in the second year of his rookie contract, holds an $870,000 base salary this season, which comes out to around $48,333 per week.
Overall, the NFL has taken quite a bit of money out of multiple Steelers players' pockets this year. According to Spotrac, the Steelers entered Week 14 leading the league in total fine amount with an astounding $364,751, with the Baltimore Ravens sitting in second place on this leaderboard ($282,535).
Warren has tallied 884 yards from scrimmage and three total touchdowns this season.
