There has been quite the debate over Mike Tomlin’s future with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Steelers have had a season to forget this year. From their woes on offense to their lackluster performances against under .500 teams, not much has gone their way this season. Barring a surprise turn of events in the coming weeks, Pittsburgh will miss the playoffs for the fourth time in the last six years.
Tomlin is under contract with the Steelers for a mere one more year. Some want the Steelers to continue to call on Tomlin to lead the way, while others, like Ryan Clark, believe that the longtime head coach should begin to question whether it is best to stay put in Pittsburgh.
"It's time for a conversation about change in Pittsburgh," Clark said on ESPN's "Get Up" program. "It's time for Mike Tomlin to go sit with Art Rooney and say 'Ok, here are the reasons I think I should stay, here are the reasons I think I shouldn't.' I think Mr. Ronney should also have that opportunity. … Mike Tomlin is now spending his time teaching his players how to be professional about addressing the media because they can't be professional on gameday.
"That lack of effort shown by George Pickens, shown by Dionate Johnson, has now permeated through the entire team. And Mike Tomlin needs to figure out if this is the place for him because I don't think it is."
Clark, who featured under Tomlin for seven seasons, is not calling for the Steelers to fire the one-time Super Bowl-winning head coach. Instead, he sees that the Steelers and Tomlin should each look for a fresh start elsewhere.
"I'm saying this should be one of those relationships when we come together and say, 'This marriage has been absolutely amazing. We've raised kids. We've done amazing things. We have these memories that we will share forever. Now where we are, we have grown apart and in growing apart, I need a new partner. I need somebody that could take me to the next level in the second chapter of my career and of my life,'" Clark said.
"And as the Pittsburgh Steelers, you need to go find something else as well. But this is what I promise you. It's gonna be a lot easier for Mike Tomlin to go somewhere and find success than it is going to be able for the Pittsburgh Steelers to find his successor."
The Steelers are set to host the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday, which could end up being Tomlin’s final home game as head coach of the AFC North side.
