On the heels of a much-needed 16-10 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, the Pittsburgh Steelers will meet the Arizona Cardinals in Week 13.
Pittsburgh’s defense rose to the occasion against Cincinnati, and cornerback Joey Porter Jr. was instrumental in helping to contain the Jake Browning-led Bengals offense.
Porter faced Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase for much of the divisional contest. While Chase recorded four caches for 81 receiving yards against the Steelers, he did not enjoy much success when squaring off with the rookie. According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Porter shadowed Chase on 24 of 28 (85.7 percent) of the wide receiver’s routes, and he allowed an average target separation of 0.9 yards to the third-year wideout.
Porter is set to next face Marquise Brown, and for Pittsburgh’s secondary to slow down the Kyler Murray-led Cardinals offense, the former Penn State standout must win this coverage matchup.
Steelers CB Joey Porter Jr. vs. Cardinals WR Marquise Brown
Brown has been dealing with a heel injury. He did not feature in a single practice session this week due to the nagging ailment. Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon did note during a press conference on Friday that the fifth-year wideout is "trending in the right direction" to play against Pittsburgh.
Brown has been listed as questionable for Week 13, but barring a notable surprise, he should go on to play on Sunday.
A crucial coverage matchup against Porter will await Brown. Porter has recently been called on to cover the opponent’s top wideout threat, and the first-year cornerback has simply continued to impress. It was just in Week 10 that he helped hold Cleveland Browns wide receiver Amari Cooper to a mere 34 receiving yards.
Porter has been enjoying the challenge of covering the opponent’s No. 1 wideout option.
"This is something a corner always wants," Porter said ahead of Week 13. "A corner is remembered by its matchups.
"The fact that I get to go against these guys and match up with them early, it's fine with me."
Porter will be put to the test against a wideout in Brown who boasts keen speed. If Porter can win this coverage duel, he sure would then boost his odds for the 2023 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award.
