The Pittsburgh Steelers were banged up last Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks. The team was missing both middle linebackers at one point in the game, as Payton Wilson battled heat-related illness and Patrick Queen was dealing with an oblique injury.

Both of them look set to play, as Queen as able to practice all week, looking ready for the game against the New England Patriots. But his recovery has been a little lessened (not actually) after the NFL hit Queen with a hefty fine for this hit on QB Sam Darnold last week…

NFL Fines Patrick Queen $17,389 for hit on Sam Darnold

The NFL has emphasized fining players who have unsportmanlike penalties, or conduct they view as detrimental to the game, through two weeks. Think of antics from players like George Pickens last year, but with an even greater attention to detail from the league office. But hits to the QB’s head? That’s always going to be a fine from the league.

Personally, I don’t believe that Queen intentionally tried to hit Darnold in the head. A Pro Bowler who has never been known for being dirty, I think his hand was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Now, the fact that the fine occurred on a play where Queen was not only injured but also ended up resulting in a TD due to miscommunication from the secondary is a double whammy you don’t want.

“Not to do that expletive*, that expletive* was expletive* bad,” said DC Teryl Austin when asked about the TD his defense allowed on that play. So it’s safe to say that it’s one that everyone will be aiming to forget as soon as possible. A buttoned-up Patriots team is welcoming Pittsburgh to town in what will be one of the better games of the early window.
