Sunday’s home loss to the Buffalo Bills was one of the more disappointing losses the Pittsburgh Steelers have had in some time. Despite getting help from the Cincinnati Bengals on Thanksgiving and heading into Sunday with a chance to open up the lead in the division, the Steelers got flattened on both sides of the ball.
What’s even worse, though, is that the defense, who is supposed to be the heart and soul of the team, that boasts one of the highest payrolls in the league, let the Bills go for nearly 250 yards on the ground. If that wasn’t the recipe for teams going forward, it surely will be now following a pair of concerning injuries on defense.
Steelers lose Patrick Queen, James Pierre to injury vs. Bills
You can say what you want about Patrick Queen, but the run defense was considerably worse when he left the game. Payton Wilson may get a lot of tackles, but he simply can’t be a three-down linebacker for the Steelers right now.
Derrick Harmon being out showed against the Bills, though more than a few of Buffalo’s big runs were along the perimeter. T.J. Watt, who was also seen limping at the end of the game (though thought to be less severe), Nick Herbig, and Alex Highsmith couldn’t set the edge.
Then, James Pierre, who has been a revelation at the corner No.2 spot, went down with a concussion and was also ruled out. The Steelers had once starter Darius Slay as an inactive on Sunday, and that thrust Asante Samuel Jr. into a starting role.
What’s crazy is that despite the back-to-back losses, boos, and chants from the Steelers faithful at Acrisure, Pittsburgh is only behind Baltimore in the division due to a tiebreaker and the two will square off for the first time next week.
So while there is a chance for Pittsburgh to right the ship, it feels like the team is at rock bottom.
