The Pittsburgh Steelers have the No. 20 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

A few weeks ago, it felt like the Steelers might have their pick at the top quarterbacks in this year's draft class.

Unfortunately for Pittsburgh, that's no longer the case.

Liberty quarterback Malik Willis and Pittsburgh Panthers quarterback Kenny Pickett could be top 10 picks after both players had excellent Pro Days.

At this point, there's little hope that either will fall to the Steelers — especially Willis (and it feels like he's the quarterback that Pittsburgh really wants).

The Steelers have two choices at this point:

  • Forget about a quarterback and focus on another position in the first round.
  • Trade up in the draft to get Malik Willis.

There are no other choices for Pittsburgh.

I expect the Steelers to go with the first choice. But if they go with the second choice (like USA Today predicts in this mock draft) and decide they want to trade up, which team do they make a deal with?

The Carolina Panthers are a legitimate threat at No. 6 to take Willis. Matt Rhule and Mike Tomlin were the only two head coaches at Willis' Pro Day.

The three teams directly in front of the Panthers — the New York Giants, the New York Jets, and the Houston Texans — aren't a threat to take a quarterback.

But the Detroit Lions at No. 2 could be a threat. After Willis' excellent Pro Day, we started hearing the Lions mentioned as a team with interest in the talented young quarterback.

Is the Lions' interest real? Because that would change everything about this scenario if it's true.

The Steelers would have to either wait until after the Lions draft to make a deal (which would give those teams the leverage over Pittsburgh) or they'd have to gamble and make a trade with the hope that Detroit doesn't draft Willis.

Mike Farrell of Rivals.com reported on Wednesday evening that the Lions' "interest" in Willis is nothing more than an attempt to drive up the trade price for the No. 2 pick.

You can see how this gets a bit tricky for the Steelers. What is real and what isn't real during draft season? That's what Pittsburgh has to figure out.

We'll hear plenty of rumors over the next month. For now, I think the Steelers are going to roll with Mitch Trubisky in 2022 and call it a day. But I wouldn't be surprised if the Steelers draft trade talk heats up over the next few weeks.
