The Pittsburgh Steelers signed free agent Mitch Trubisky this offseason to be the starting quarterback in 2022.

Trubisky, however, wasn't signed to be the Steelers' long-term answer at quarterback. He's simply a placeholder for whoever that person ends up being (unless Trubisky plays out of his mind in 2022).

Pittsburgh is still searching for their franchise quarterback. And based on comments from head coach Mike Tomlin and general manager Kevin Colbert, it sounds like the Steelers are committed to drafting a quarterback in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Colbert and Tomlin both made it a point on Sunday at the NFL owners meetings to mention that signing Trubisky will not prevent the team from seeking out a quarterback in the draft.

When you combine those statements with Tomlin checking out multiple college quarterbacks at Pro Days last week, it certainly feels like the Steelers are gearing up to take a quarterback early in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Now, just because Pittsburgh wants to add a quarterback in the draft, doesn't mean there's a lack of faith in Trubisky.

The Steelers really like Trubisky. And they're confident in him in 2022.

"We were really interested in Mitch," said Tomlin on Sunday. "He was really interested in us. And those are good things. He was just an attractive guy to us. It didn't require us to use any of our draft capital."

"He's been a winner," added Tomlin. "He's got experience and youth. He's healthy. It was just so much of his profile that was attractive to us in terms of what we were looking for in the position."

Pittsburgh is realistic enough to know that Trubisky probably isn't about to become Tom Brady. They're hoping for the best, but they have to plan like Trubisky isn't the long-term answer.

That's why the franchise is making the quarterback position a focus in this year's draft. At this point, I'd be extremely surprised if the Steelers didn't draft a quarterback this year.
