ESPN thinks a Pittsburgh Steelers veteran could be in danger of being released before the start of the 2022 season.
Brooke Pryor, who covers the Steelers for ESPN, listed cornerback Justin Layne this week as a Pittsburgh player who could be cut this summer.
From ESPN:
Since being selected in the third round of the 2019 draft, Layne has been primarily a special teamer. Despite injuries at cornerback last season, Layne played 28 defensive snaps, and James Pierre surpassed him on the depth chart. The Steelers didn't pick up a corner in the draft, which works in Layne's favor, but unless he shows a big jump in training camp, Layne is firmly on the bubble entering the final year of his rookie deal.

This could be an interesting situation for Layne. The Steelers don't have a ton of depth at cornerback, which seemingly works in his favor.
But as Pryor pointed out, Pittsburgh didn't really turn to Layne last season when injuries became an issue. It's clear they don't view him as anything more than a special teams player. However, he knows the system, so would it be worth it to cut the former third-round pick?
Ultimately, this move won't have a major impact on the Steelers in 2022. But depth is always important. And you never know when it could come into play.
If Pittsburgh ends up signing another cornerback this summer, though, Layne's fate will likely be sealed.
