The Pittsburgh Steelers' list of potential quarterback options in 2022 is starting to shrink.

  • Earlier this week, Aaron Rodgers announced his plans to return to the Green Bay Packers. Rodgers was linked to the Steelers over the weekend.
  • Russell Wilson was traded from the Seattle Seahawks to the Denver Broncos.
  • Carson Wentz was traded from the Indianapolis Colts to the Washington Commanders.

I'm not sure how viable any of those options were for the Steelers, but they're no longer options nonetheless.

There's another quarterback option for the Steelers that's also off the board.

Pittsburgh reportedly won't be pursuing Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson.

Watson hasn't played since 2020 when he led the NFL in passing yards (4,823) and was voted to this third straight Pro-Bowl.

The former Clemson star has been entangled in a legal battle since early 2021 that stems from 22 civil suits that were filed against him that allege inappropriate behavior during visits to various massage therapists.

A grand jury will hear evidence against Watson on Friday. The outcome of the grand jury process will give us more clarity as to what Watson's future holds (he could end up facing criminal charges). If it's a positive outcome for Watson on Friday, then we could see NFL teams start working to acquire the maligned quarterback.

The Steelers, however, won't be one of those teams, regardless of what happens on Friday.

Pittsburgh could still pursue a quarterback via a trade (Kirk Cousins or Jimmy Garoppolo) or free agency (Mitch Trubisky or Marcus Mariota). Or they could roll with Mason Rudolph in 2022, which at this point seems unlikely.
