The Pittsburgh Steelers have shown interest in free agent safety Tyrann Mathieu according to a report from NFL reporter Jordan Schultz.
The Steelers need to sign another safety in free agency. Pittsburgh hasn't re-signed Terrell Edmunds, which leaves a massive void in the Steelers' secondary.
A reunion with Edmunds is still possible, but for now, it's unclear if Pittsburgh will make him an offer.
Mathieu would obviously be a slam dunk addition to the Steelers' defense. He would bring versatility, toughness, and elite leadership to Pittsburgh's defense. He's essentially a perfect fit in the Steelers' defense.
But for the last couple of weeks, all we've heard is that Pittsburgh is extremely unlikely to sign Mathieu due to the amount of money he'll command. Mathieu is likely looking for a three-year deal worth around $45 million.
I think this is likely a scenario where the Steelers are keeping an eye on Mathieu, just in case his price point falls a bit.
That's a wise approach by Pittsburgh, but I don't think it's going to happen. Mathieu could've already signed by now — for a significant amount of money. The former LSU standout is simply waiting for the right opportunity.
I don't think he's going to find himself in a situation where he has to take significantly less money than he was anticipating, which is why I don't think Pittsburgh will be where Mathieu lands.
