Steelers 2025 Practice Squad Tracker: Pittsburgh brings back fan favorite to kick off the first of 16 signings
A look at who will be joining the Steelers in 2025.
Final cuts for the Pittsburgh Steelers are over, but many of those who were released or waived earlier this week will return to join the club’s 16-man practice squad.
The NFL increased the size of the practice squad to 16 players to help teams out during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ten of the 16 players need to have no more than two accrued seasons, but the other six can be vested veterans of all kinds. Each practice squad member can be elevated to the active roster a maximum of three times and can be signed to the 53-man roster by their own club or any other club, for that matter, at any point in time.
Simply put, the practice squad can matter a lot throughout the year. We’ll track who made the cut for the Steelers and then update this post with the finalized practice squad.

Bishop’s spot was far from safe on the active roster, even if he caught some by surprise. With him clearing waivers on Tuesday, he returns to the practice squad as a valuable depth piece in the secondary.
As for Leal and Woods, those decisions feel a little more surprising since it felt like the team wanted a clean break. However, with this many players who offer backup potential on the practice squad, it’s tough to argue against the decision-making.
Castro, Galbreath, and Williams are three rookie UDFAs who had moments throughout the spring and summer that make their arrival on the practice squad more than appropriate.
Pittsburgh’s regular season begins with a Week 1 matchup against the New York Jets on Sunday, Sept. 7.
