2024 NFL Draft Prospect, Georgia OT Amarius Mims officially takes top 30 visit with the Pittsburgh Steelers

The closer we get to the 2024 NFL Draft, the more information we receive on what positions and players the Pittsburgh Steelers are targeting.

Making no bones about visiting and meeting with offensive tackles, to this point Pittsburgh was largely just doing their due diligence.

But following a report from Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, that's changing:

Steelers Offically Host Amarius Mims to Pre-Draft Visit

No offensive tackle in this class has a higher upside than Georgia's Amarius Mims. An elite athlete for his size, I spoke with one source who raved over him:

Unbelievable athlete. Looks like he was built in a lab. Has natural power. Knee bend and foot quickness are great for his size. Tape was phenomenal against Ohio State in the playoff as a sophomore. If he stayed healthy this season he would have put himself in the top 10 conversation. Upside is higher than Alt and Fashanu. Getting a discount because of lack of playing time, but experience is big for offensive tackles. -Anonymous Scout

Now this visit spells trouble for incumbent starter Dan Moore for the first time all offseason in my opinion.

Sure Pittsburgh has met with or gone to the Pro Days of other tackles, but none checked all of the following boxes:

  • Played RT in college
  • Hosted by Pittsburgh on Top-30 visit
  • Had Steelers GM and HC at their Pro Day

Pittsburgh has made it clear that Broderick Jones will be getting back to his natural position of left tackle sooner rather than later.

Add on the aforementioned Pro Day attendance and official visits that include very few first-round prospects at WR, center or CB, and it's becoming increasingly likely that RT is the position Pittsburgh drafts in round one.

Moreover, we know Pittsburgh's appreciation for players with pedigree and winning backgrounds, not to mention their fondness for Georgia Bulldogs.

With three alumni of the football program via Broderick Jones, George Pickens and Darnell Washington, Mims would fit like a glove in Pittsburgh's youthful offense.

So I wouldn't write Mims to Pittsburgh at 20 in pen just yet, but based on context clues and talks around the league, that's the pick as we stand a month out of night one of the 2024 NFL Draft.
